Liverpool defender Nathaniel Phillips set to resume Stuttgart loan spell after Anfield recall

Liverpool defender Nathaniel Phillips is set to return to Stuttgart on loan after being recalled earlier this month.

The 22-year-old spent the first half of the season with the Bundesliga side, but was summoned back to Anfield by Jurgen Klopp to be part of the matchday squad for the FA Cup third round win over Merseyside rivals Everton last weekend.

Phillips was also on the bench for Saturday’s 1-0 Premier League win over Tottenham as injuries to Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren left Klopp with only Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez as fit senior centre-halves, but with that pair now on their way back to fitness, he will be allowed to leave again.

The Englishman has made 11 appearances for Stuttgart so far this season, and will now rejoin the Bundesliga II outfit on their winter training camp in Marbella.

Stuttgart will resume their league campaign with a home fixture against Heidenheim on January 29.
