Liverpool defender fined £1,000 for speeding on major city road

Liverpool footballer Nathaniel Clyne was caught speeding - doing 52mph in a 30mph zone - on New Year's Day.

The Reds right-back was driving down West Derby Road in Tuebrook when police spotted him doing 22mph over the limit.

Clyne, of Massams Lane, Formby's came before Liverpool Magistrates Court last week where he was fined £1,000 and handed six penalty points.

The 28-year-old pleaded guilty to speeding.

His fine must be paid by February 4.

A victim surcharge of £100 was also imposed, with court costs of £85.

Clyne has been linked with moves to leave Anfield in the January transfer window, but so far no transfer has materialised.

The England international was on the verge of leaving the club in the summer, but he suffered a serious cruciate knee ligament injury in pre-season.

For the last five months, the ex-Southampton defender has been recuperating at Liverpool's Melwood training ground.

Clyne has played 103 times for Liverpool, but has featured rarely as the last couple of years have been decimated by injury and Trent Alexander-Arnold has emerged as first choice in his position.

Liverpool FC declined to comment on the case.
