Liverpool defender Andy Robertson makes Lionel Messi admission as Barcelona superstar linked with Premier League transfer

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson admits he hopes Lionel Messi will stay with Barcelona this summer.

The Argentina superstar handed in a transfer request last week and could now end a 17-year career with the Catalan giants.

Messi is keen to leave after a difficult season ended with an embarrassing 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals, having scored 634 times in 731 appearances for the club.

Liverpool 's Premier League rivals Man City are favourites to sign the 33-year-old, but Robertson doesn't want to see him arrive in England.

Asked by ESPN FC how many goals Messi would score if he moves to the Premier League, Robertson said: "Hopefully none because he stays at Barcelona, to be honest with you!

"If he does, I'm sure he'll smash the record no doubt."

The Scottish left-back has tangled with Messi before as Liverpool overcame a 3-0 deficit to triumph 4-3 in the Champions League semi-final in 2019.

Robertson famously ruffled Messi's hair in the second leg at Anfield, but he has previously admitted regretting the incident.

He told the   Daily Mail  : “When I look back on things, I don’t really regret anything because I feel as if everything is experience that makes you what you are.

"But I do look back on that moment with Messi as one regret. I don’t like seeing it. When I saw it afterwards I was gutted.

“We all had the attitude that day that nothing was standing in our way to get to that final and we created that atmosphere around the stadium - me and Fabinho were tracking him and there was a tangle of legs and we were on the floor. To do that to the greatest player that has ever played…

“I have nothing but respect for him and   Barcelona, but we went into that game with the attitude that we were 3-0 down, we needed a miracle, we needed something special and if that little thing stopped the best player in the world playing to his highest potential…

“But I do regret it. That’s not me as a person. That’s not my personality. But that night a lot of things happened that you don’t really remember. There was no thought process behind it.
