Liverpool dedicate FA Youth Cup final victory over Manchester City to Stephen Darby

Liverpool have dedicated their dramatic FA Youth Cup triumph to former full-back Stephen Darby.

The 30-year-old was forced to retire from playing earlier this season after being diagnosed with motor neuron disease.

Darby came through the youth ranks at the Kirkby Academy and was part of two FA Youth Cup winning teams in 2006 and 2007.

He went on to make six senior appearances for the Reds before enjoying a successful spell with Bradford City.

Thursday night's penalty shootout victory over Manchester City in the final ended Liverpool's 12-year wait to lift the FA Youth Cup for the fourth time.

Speaking about the dedication, LFC Academy director Alex Inglethorpe said: “Stephen was very much in our thoughts this week.

“He played in our last Youth Cup winning team in 2007 and captained the team to victory in 2006.

“He’s one of us and a huge part of our history as an Academy.”
