Liverpool Councillors offered support ahead of 'challenging' time as they await government decision

Liverpool City Councillors are being offered additional support ahead of what is expected to be a 'challenging' time.

The council is bracing itself for a damning inspection report and potential government intervention following a recent inspection.

Local Government Secretary Robert Jenrick will deliver a statement to Parliament tomorrow in which he could order the full government takeover of the city council.

Mr Jenrick ordered the inspection of the council following the arrest of Joe Anderson in December, one of a number of arrests linked to the city council as part of a corruption probe.

In a message to city councillors, chief executive Tony Reeves said: "We know that the next few days are going to be challenging for Liverpool City Council and for you personally as a valued councillor."

He added: "If you feel you need additional support over the coming days please ensure you seek it at the earliest opportunity, from your GP, party whip and Liverpool City Council's established mental health and well being offer."

He added that the council is exploring other avenues of support for elected members, adding: "Please take care of yourself and your colleagues this week. "

The message is a mark of the severity of the situation facing the council and the city ahead of tomorrow's announcement.

Liverpool will be the focus of huge national attention - for all the wrong reasons.

If the government does decide to carry out a full takeover of Liverpool City Council, it will be an unprecedented step.

While this has been done with smaller councils like Tower Hamlets and Northamptonshire before - it has never been done with a city the size, scale and prominence of Liverpool.

All eyes will be on the House of Commons tomorrow to see how this plays out.
