Liverpool councillor dies of coronavirus as colleagues pay tribute to 'wonderful friend'

Tributes are being paid to a veteran Liverpool councillor who has died of Covid-19.

The death of councillor Richard McLinden, who represented Warbreck, was confirmed by Liverpool's Labour branch.

First elected in a 2007 by-election, he had been chair of the council's health and adult social care select committee for a number of years.

Mayor Joe Anderson described him as one of the city’s “best-loved councillors”.

He said: “This is devastating news for Richard’s family and all of those who knew him.

“He had been a dedicated and hard-working councillor for the people of Warbreck over the past 13 years, and had made a valuable contribution to both the community and the work of the council.

“His death is something that we are all deeply shocked by. Our heartfelt support and condolences go out to Richard’s family.

“It’s important they know how sincerely hurt we are by his untimely death.”

In a statement on Twitter, Liverpool Labour said: "Our thoughts are with the family of Cllr Richard McLinden, Chair of the Health & Social Care Select Committee, who has suddenly passed away following Covid. #RIP#HandsFaceSpace

In a joint post, his fellow Warbreck ward councillors said they were "heartbroken" at his death.

A post from the Warbreck Labour Councillors account said: "We are heartbroken to learn that our wonderful friend and colleague

"Councillor Richard McLinden passed away this morning. He was a true socialist that cared for his family, his community and his city. He touched so many people’s lives and will be missed beyond words."

Liberal Democrat leader Richard Kemp said councillor McLinden "offended no one and helped anyone".

In a tweet, he said: "I am really saddened to have been informed about the death this morning from Covid of Labour Cllr Richard McLinden. He was a devoted carer and Scouser. He offended no-one and helped anyone. He's a real loss to our City."

Labour whip Ruth Bennett posted a picture of councillor McLinden's last speech in Liverpool town hall.

She said: "So sad to hear the news of the sudden death of Cllr RichardMcLinden. He was such a kind and generous colleague. The photo is of Richard's last speech in the town hall.

"@MacDicky you will be truly missed. Love and prayers to his wife and family."
