Liverpool councillor complains to police about treatment during Bootle protest as shocking images appear online

A Liverpool City councillor has complained to the police about her treatment after shocking images from a protest in Bootle appeared online.

The ECHO understands that former Deputy Mayor of Liverpool, Cllr Ann O'Byrne has alleged that she was assaulted by officers while out protesting on Sunday.

The force has confirmed it has received a written letter of complaint from Cllr O'Byrne.

The Warbreck councillor was one of many people who came out to join a counter-protest as far-right MEP candidate Tommy Robinson visited Bootle on Sunday.

Images and video that have appeared on social media show the Labour Councillor being dragged along the floor by police during the event.

"Proud to stand with so many friends and comrades against the racists who seek to divide working class communities with hate."

Responding to another comment on the post, she added: "One of the officers was just dragging me by my hair."

We now understand the city councillor has put in an official complaint and is waiting to be interviewed by Merseyside Police.

Cllr O'Byrne - a former Deputy Police Commissioner for Merseyside -  has received plenty of support and praise for her efforts on Sunday on social media.

Helen Ball said: "So sorry Anne only just read elsewhere that you were hurt in Bootle."

Vicki Lea added: "Oh Ann, hope you're feeling better soon. Well done for all your hard work."

Another image on the day shows a woman with a walking stick on the floor surrounded by police officers.

According to Merseyside Police's Chief Constable, other politicians praised the work of officers in handling the tense situation on Sunday.

He tweeted: "Thank you to the local politicians who have contacted me to thank my officers for the way they policed today's demonstrations.

"Our role is to be impartial and uphold the laws made by Parliament. I am proud of my Officers who have done their duty in accordance with their Oath."

Statement from Merseyside Police

Responding, the force said it had received a complaint from Cllr O'Byrne.

A spokesman said: "Merseyside Police can confirm that it has received a written letter of complaint from Councillor Ann O’Byrne following a protest during a political rally at Douglas Place, Bootle, by MEP candidate Tommy Robinson on Sunday, 20 May 2019.

"The complaint is currently being looked into and therefore it would be inappropriate to comment on this particular incident.

"During the operation there were approximately 100 supporters of the political rally and approximately 300 counter protestors.

"Officers from the force worked hard to ensure that the rally could go ahead, whilst at the same time giving the counter protestors the opportunity to carry out peaceful protest.

"Events like this can present difficult challenges for all involved, including the police officers who are often caught in the middle of opposing groups, and Merseyside Police is committed to facilitating peaceful protest, whilst remaining completely impartial.

"The force recognises the right of people to demonstrate peacefully and express their views, and we will continue to work with protest groups in the future to ensure any such events pass peacefully and safely.

"Merseyside Police will not tolerate criminality, disorder or anti-social behaviour in any form and will take action against anyone who abuses the right to free speech."

Speaking on Facebook after the protest, Cllr O'Byrne said: "Feeling battered and bruised after today’s anti-fascist rallies in Bootle and Huyton but never downbeat.
