Liverpool Council lays out next steps after controversial removal of cycle lane

Liverpool City Council has announced what it intends to do next after the controversial removal of the West Derby Road cycle lane.

Cabinet member Cllr Dan Barrington announced that one lane of the pop-up scheme, brought in last year, would be removed following complaints from local people and councillors.

But the move was heavily criticised by some, who said it made a mockery of the council's climate change commitments.

And it also caused problems with the government, who said Liverpool's funding for active travel schemes would be suspended while the reasons behind the removal of the lane were looked into.

Cllr Barrington has today released an update on what the council intends to do next when it comes to cycling in the area.

He said: "Last week I said we would be looking at alternative routes for cyclists, following the removal of the temporary pop-up cycle lane on West Derby Road.

"Highways officers are currently working on plans, once those plans are completed, we'll be going out to a full public consultation.

"Following the public consultation, depending on the feedback we get and subject to any changes that we might need to make, we will look to implement work on site."

He said this process should take around three months and it should coincide with the first phase of the new permanent cycling facilities on The Strand - part of the £22m revamp of the main waterfront route.

People were not left particularly impressed by the latest announcement.

On Twitter, Paul said: "So how many lives will be placed in danger while we wait three months?"

Another user said: "You'd have thought any plans and consultation would have taken place prior to taking away a cycle lane."

Twitter user Mounsey described the move as 'Absolutely feeble jam tomorrow rubbish', adding: "The lane did 100,000 trips in the first year and would have done more in 2nd and 3rd."
