Liverpool Council explains why you can visit the pub but not a relative's house

Ministers announced a tightening of rules in response to "major increases" in Covid-19 cases in Merseyside yesterday.

Residents are no longer allowed to socialise with other people in private homes or gardens.

This includes visiting family members who do not live with you or are not part of your support bubble.

But restaurants, pubs and bars will remain open, all while being restricted to table service only and new closure times between 10pm to 5am.

However, this has caused confusion among many people, who commented on the ECHO's Facebook page questioning why you can visit the pub but not a relative's house.

Sean Watkinson said: "So basically carry on eating & drinking out.. but you can't go and visit family. Insult."

Sandra Mary Allan said: "So I can go eat out with my bezzie, but can’t see my sister who lives in another house."

And Bob Hibbert wrote: "So I’ll meet the family down the pub with potentially loads of other people after travelling, because I can’t meet them in their or my gardens despite us only living less than 50 yards apart as the crow flies."

Responding to the question in a post, Liverpool City Council explained the reasoning behind the decision.

The council said: "This is because the hospitality industry has enhanced measures, such as risk assessments and test and trace, which private homes don’t have."
