Liverpool could save millions on new attackers with four underrated transfer options

Liverpool certainly know how to spot a bargain or two and there could be a few of them taking to the field for their countries this summer which the Reds will no doubt be aware of.

When the European Championships kick off in the middle of June, there will be much excitement surrounding many of the players involved, but that too can be said of the U21 version of the tournament, of which the knockout stages take place this coming week.

Ahead of the U21 Euros kicking off on Monday, the ECHO spoke to Scouted Football's Joe Donnohue, who writes on young talents coming through around Europe, to pick out the best players to watch and those who might one day be of interest to Liverpool.

In attack, there are four options that could be of particular interest who are being tipped to be influential as the quarter-finals kick off with Ibrahima Konate and France taking on the Netherlands, who boast reported Reds targets such as Sven Botman among their ranks.

Fellow Frenchman Odsonne Edouard has been linked with a £30m move to the Premier League on occasion over the last few months, with Liverpool, Arsenal and others among those said to be keen.

"Moussa Dembele, who has been on loan at Atletico Madrid from Lyon, was one of those who was around the U21 squad a lot longer than anyone thought he would be and Edouard falls into the same category," Donnohue said.

" Karim Benzema coming back into the senior squad was probably the worst bit of news he got and he is a player who a lot of people misconstrue as just a traditional number nine.

"He is a lot more than that: he can play in the channels and he loves coming off the left-hand side.

"For me, the attacker I would be keeping an eye on as well as Edouard is Amine Gouiri, who is at Nice. He is not quite a winger and not quite a centre-forward.

"He is a very good operator in the attacking spaces and he had a very good season in a tepid Nice team, getting around 20 goal contributions.

"This was coming off the back of some serious injuries and if he can get the link up with Edouard, France will be in with a shout of winning the tournament."

While France might be the leading contenders for the competition, there are lots of other players in the other seven remaining teams who could make a significant impact too.

Italy take on another favourite in Portugal, while Spain face Croatia and Denmark take on Germany.

"[Italy forward Gianluca] Scamacca is an incredibly imposing striker but he is very mobile for a six foot three lad," Donnohue continued.

"You cannot miss him and he is a very good finisher. He scored a goal for Genoa a few months ago now where he was on the half-turn on the edge of the area, and he lashed one in hard and low.

"At the U20 World Cup in 2019, he had a goal disallowed in the 100-and-something minute in the semi-final where he took the ball on his chest and then did a bicycle kick - incredible for someone of his stature.

"And then there is [Giacomo] Raspadori, who is the complete opposite: quick, light, fast.

"He was named in the senior squad and the U21 squad so it is anyone's guess which one he will be in, but he is another to watch at Sassuolo."

Much of what Liverpool end up doing in the transfer market in terms of forward line additions may well hinge on what they can do with outgoings, with the futures of players like Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri still to be determined.

They might not be household names yet - though they might be very soon - but Edouard, Gouiri, Scamacca and Raspadori might all be useful options to consider for Liverpool as the next evolution of their forward line takes shape.
