Liverpool could receive Mohamed Salah boost as Olympic Games decision given to Egyptian

Egypt under-23 boss Shawky Gharib says it will be down to Mohamed Salah to choose whether or not he wants to participate in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo this summer.

The Games, which are set to take place between July 24 and August 9, are to be competed for during the Reds' pre-season ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

Liverpool will be desperate for Salah to have a proper break this summer after competing at the World Cup in 2018 and the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019.

Gharib told ON Sport TV channel: "We have to send a preliminary list of 50 players. Salah will be the first on the list as an official call-up.

"Salah's participation in the Tokyo Olympics is in his hands, but there are other factors that may affect his decision.

"The Olympic football tournament will be held at the same time Liverpool will be preparing for the new season."

Under Olympic regulations, teams can only select three players over the age of 23.

A final squad decision is expected to be made in June, while Egypt are hoping to play a series of friendlies in the build-up to the Games in order to prepare.

Those are likely to be in the international breaks during March and June, with Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, and South Korea reportedly possible opponents.
