Liverpool could get Champions League boost as Jurgen Klopp urged to copy Manchester United

Here is your Liverpool morning digest on Tuesday, March 2.

Reds could get Champions League boost

Liverpool and the Champions League are a pair with an immense history.

The Reds have won the European trophy six times - which is a record-high in England, with their most recent triumph coming in 2019.

In past seasons, the prestigious tournament has proved to be somewhat of a positive distraction for Jurgen Klopp and his squad.

With Liverpool's title defence all-but-over, Klopp's attention will be on finishing in the top four to ensure Champions League football at Anfield next season.

The hope of a seventh European crown for the Reds is now their only chance of winning silverware in this campaign.

A spark of belief is urgently needed to galvanise all concerned at the club and the Champions League could provide the opportunity for the confidence to return to the six-time champions of Europe.

Liverpool have a 2-0 advantage for their second-leg Round of 16 tie with RB Leipzig, with the decisive game set to be played next Wednesday.

Klopp could follow Manchester United example

Something rather strange happened on Sunday evening and it wasn't the out-of-form Liverpool winning a game of football.

What was notable about the 2-0 win at Sheffield United was the Reds comfortably beating a team struggling at the wrong end of the table - something Klopp and his side have struggled to do this season.

In nine games against the bottom seven this season, Liverpool have taken just 10 points.

Klopp's hopes of a successful title defence are gone with Manchester City simply too good at the moment, but the race for the top four is still alive.

What should be deemed as a potential positive will only happen if the Reds can build on their routine win over the Blades at the weekend.

Manchester United have been poor against the 'top six' this season and have taken the majority of their points against those struggling in the division, something Klopp and Liverpool should look to replicate between now and the end of the campaign.

The champions have still got to play Fulham, Newcastle United, Southampton, West Bromwich Albion, Burnley and Crystal Palace between now and the end of the season, with all of those sides, at the time of being written, in the bottom seven.
