Liverpool could copy Danny Ings trick to further aid transfer budget this summer

Liverpool still have a few players that could be on the move before the end of the transfer window, with several on the edges of the squad - particularly those who spent last season out on loan - unlikely to get many first-team chances.

Marko Grujic and Loris Karius are perhaps most in need of finding a new permanent home, while there are others too who might be best served leaving Anfield in order to further their careers as long as the offer is right.

In 2018, Liverpool agreed to send Danny Ings on loan to Southampton, with an obligation on the south coast club to pay a £20 million transfer fee 12 months later.

Last season, he scored 22 Premier League goals as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men found value in their investment.

And a similar arrangement for a few other players could be a way forward over the next couple of weeks as Liverpool look to trim Jurgen Klopp's squad down and make room for a potential arrival after they moved for Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota.

On the Morning Bulletin podcast, Matt Addison discussed rumours coming out of Turkey that Fenerbahce have entered talks for Divock Origi and the wider issue of player sales. Four Premier League teams - Fulham, Brighton, Newcastle United and Aston Villa - are reportedly interested in the Belgian forward.

Addison said: "With Origi, Liverpool could have cashed in, as they would have done with Xherdan Shaqiri and Harry Wilson, had the price been right.

"He has already written his place in Liverpool folklore in the Champions League, but last year he didn’t do a great deal and he is not a particularly effective option and if Liverpool can get the right sort of fee, it might be one that they look to cash in on.

"The idea from Turkey is that this would be a loan with an obligation to buy next summer, and that could be a way around a difficult market.

"The likes of Wilson and Shaqiri are not really getting much interest, if any, from the rest of the Premier League at the price-tag that Liverpool have set.

"A loan deal with an obligation once COVID-19 is hopefully less of an issue financially, potentially this could be a possibility for two or three players this summer."

Some clubs - like Aston Villa, for instance - have splashed the cash this summer already and could yet spend more, but plenty of other clubs have been more cautious.

But many clubs would perhaps prefer not to spend heavily this summer, with uncertainty surrounding things like television rebates and when fans will be allowed back into stadiums.

With no absolute guarantees that the impacts of coronavirus will cease before next summer, the loan-to-buy strategy is not entirely risk-free for clubs lower down the table looking to make additions.

But before the October 5 deadline, as clubs get more desperate in the transfer window, it could be a calculated gamble worth taking - and one which could free up more funds for Liverpool, with the Reds in the knowledge the money would arrive from next year.
