Liverpool consider midfield change as Jurgen Klopp issues Jordan Henderson contract update

Jurgen Klopp is pondering whether to reshape his Liverpool midfield and hand Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara a first start of the season.

Henderson and Thiago were among the final players to resume training this summer and weren't involved in the Premier League opener at Norwich City last Saturday.

They instead played for more than 80 minutes in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Anfield the following day, in which the Reds beat an Aston Villa side 4-1.

Thiago had been hampered by a minor muscle problem, while Henderson hasn't featured for Liverpool since undergoing a groin operation in February but did play for England at Euro 2020.

And Klopp believes the duo have given him a decision to make for Saturday's Premier League visit of Burnley.

"They are much closer," said the Reds boss. "They look fine, now we have to make the decision.

"They looked really good in the game (against Villa) and looked good through the training week. Now it's up to me to make some decisions."

Henderson, in the last two years of his contract, has still to agree a new deal although suggestions are the captain is moving closer to an agreement with the club.

And asked if there were any developments, Klopp said: "No. Still all good."

Liverpool are likely to be without Fabinho against Burnley on compassionate grounds with the Brazilian having missed training this week following the death of his father.

And Klopp said: “I would like to say it’s a private situation. Fab is here and is doing what he is able to do and that’s it pretty much.

“We all feel for him, we all feel with him and we give him and his family our condolences. We try to give him all the warmth, all the love we have in this moment and that’s it, the rest is private.”
