Liverpool confirm two January departures as new Philippe Coutinho question emerges

Here is your Wednesday morning Liverpool digest on January 5.

Reds confirm double departure

Liverpool have confirmed that Morgan Boyes has completed a permanent transfer to Scottish Premiership club Livingston.

The defender joined the Reds as a youngster and was a regular for the club’s under-18s and under-23s sides before making his first-team debut in December 2019 against Aston Villa in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Xavi gives Coutinho update

Barcelona head coach Xavi has admitted that the club still need to sell players in January in order to balance the books as Philippe Coutinho’s future continues to be in doubt.

The Catalan club signed Ferran Torres from Manchester City for £46.7m but are awaiting player sales in order to comply with financial regulations and officially register the winger.

Barca’s well-documented financial troubles ultimately led to Lionel Messi’s departure to PSG, with Antoine Griezmann’s exit and Sergio Aguero’s early retirement also helping ease the club’s wage bill.

However, Xavi has reiterated that outgoings are still a priority at the club, giving an update on Coutinho’s future as well as the latest on rumoured Liverpool target Ousmane Dembele’s contract negotiations.

"I have not spoken with Philippe. He's a great professional and always contributed when he plays. [But] for signings, there have to be exits, that's obvious." Xavi said, according to Spanish publication Sport.
