Liverpool confirm second permanent January exit as another defender leaves

Liverpool have confirmed that Morgan Boyes has completed a permanent transfer to Scottish Premiership club Livingston.

The defender joined the Reds as a youngster and was a regular for the club’s under-18s and under-23s sides before making his first-team debut back in December 2019.

Boyes’ debut came in the 5-0 defeat to Aston Villa in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup before he featured in the FA Cup win over Shrewsbury Town a few months later.

The Wales under-21 international spent the first half of the 2020/21 season on loan at Fleetwood Town before returning to Anfield.

The 20-year-old has signed a deal until the summer of 2023 with Livingston, but the West Lothian side also have the option to extend his Boyes' deal by a further year.

“13 years later the last day of being at @liverpool has arrived,” Boyes wrote on Twitter after his Liverpool exit was confirmed.

“I would like to thank every member of staff involved with the club past and present for helping me along the journey of being a young kid with a dream of becoming a professional footballer, to making my professional debut for the club .

“A moment that will never be forgotten for the rest of my life by me or my friends and family.

“The club and players that i can call friends for life have helped me become the person and player i am today and for that i am more thankful.

“I wish everyone the best for their future where ever that leads them. Now to turn full focus on joining up with @livingston cant wait to get started.”

While Livingston boss David Martindale said on the transfer: “I am delighted to get the signature of Morgan who had a lot of offers down South.

“Our relationship with Liverpool has really helped in getting Morgan up here to Livingston. He is a young player with a massive amount of development and potential still to come and I believe we will be very good for one another.

“I spoke to various members of staff at Liverpool and Fleetwood where Morgan was on loan and everyone spoke very highly of him and his potential.

“Morgan will come in and join up with the players very soon and I’m looking forward to working with the player and seeing him up close in training.

“Morgan is a left centre half with a very good left foot who is at a great age and at an age that we have found historically hard to recruit for.

“Finding players capable of playing 1st team football at a young age in the Scottish Premiership is extremely hard but I do believe we have found this with Morgan.

“I would like to thank David Woodfine at Liverpool and Dave Barren the players agent for all their help in getting the deal with Morgan over the line.”

Boyes is the second Liverpool youngster to depart the club in the January transfer window after Tony Gallacher joined St. Johnstone on Tuesday morning.
