Liverpool confirm postponement of Boxing Day clash with Leeds United

Liverpool's Boxing Day game against Leeds United has been postponed as the spread of coronavirus continues to cause havoc with the Premier League schedule.

The match, which was due to take place at Anfield at 12.30pm on Sunday, has been called off due to a number of positive COVID-19 cases within the Leeds squad.

The Yorkshire side have already been struggling to field a recognisable side due to a raft of injuries which contributed to a 7-0 hammering at leaders Manchester City last week.

Jurgen Klopp had been unhappy at the prospect of Liverpool playing twice in two days over the festive period with his side due at Leicester City on December 28.

It means Liverpool quartet Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho, Curtis Jones and Thiago Alcantara, who all recently tested positive for coronavirus, will be, fitness permitting, available for the Reds' next game.

However, Andy Robertson is now scheduled to miss the visit to title challengers Chelsea on January 2 as he completes a three-match ban following his red card at Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

A Liverpool statement said: "Tickets purchased for this match will remain valid for the new fixture date.

"The club will email all supporters who have purchased a ticket with details on refunds for those unable to attend the rescheduled date. Please don’t contact fan services on this matter.

"Liverpool FC would like to thank fans of both clubs for their understanding as we continue to navigate through this challenging period."

Watford's game at Wolverhampton Wanderers has also been postponed due to a similar COVID-19 outbreak among the Hornets squad.

And a statement from the Premier League said: "The League is aware that the decision to postpone these two matches will disappoint supporters and understands their frustrations at a special time of year when fans look forward to attending and watching football games.

"The League aims to provide as much clarity as possible, but unfortunately postponements sometimes have to be made at short notice, as safety is the priority. The League will endeavour to keep supporters updated if matches become at risk on a matchday.

"The Board concluded that Leeds will not be able to fulfil their fixture this weekend due to the number of players with COVID-19, injuries and illness. The club’s training ground has also been closed after consultation with the UK Health Security Agency and the Premier League."
