Liverpool confirm full investigation into alleged spitting incident aimed at Man City staff

Liverpool released a statement on Monday night confirming that they are investigating the allegation that a Manchester City coaching staff member was spat at by a fan.

Following Sunday’s pulsating 2-2 draw between the two sides at Anfield, City made a formal complaint alleging the incident took place at Liverpool’s Main Stand.

“We are conducting a full investigation, working with all relevant parties including Manchester City, to gather evidence from individuals who witnessed the incident as well as analysing all available video footage,” the statement said, via BBC Sport’s Simon Stone.

"The evidence collected to date is substantial and, if requested to do so, will be handed to Merseyside Police given the potential for criminal charges. This case will also be subject to the Club’s Official Sanctions Process.

"Anfield is our home and we will ensure it is a safe, enjoyable environment for everyone attending and will not allow unacceptable isolated behaviour to impact on our Club’s values and principles."

Speaking after the game, City manager Pep Guardiola said of the alleged incident: "I'm pretty sure Liverpool FC will take measures for this guy.

"Liverpool is greater than this person. Liverpool in its history helps to make sport better.

"There are always people that will do that."
