Liverpool confirm Champions League squad list with highly-rated youngster left out

Liverpool have confirmed their squad for the Champions League group stages - and included plenty of young talent amongst their familiar faces.

But there is not a place for highly-rated young defender Ki-Jana Hoever, who misses out on a spot with fellow Dutchman Sepp van den Berg included after his summer arrival.

Jurgen Klopp's side will face Napoli, RB Salzburg and Genk in their bid to progress beyond the first phase of the competition as they aim to defend their crown.

There are no major surprises, with goalkeeper Alisson included as he nears a return from injury, along with the rest of their star names.

There is also a space for young summer signing Harvey Elliott, who could be given his first taste of European football at the highest level.

Yet Hoever, who penned a new deal over the summer, is a surprise omission with Dejan Lovren still at the club and included having not secured a summer transfer.

22 players feature in List A of the squad, whilst seven players are initially included in List B, which includes players born on or after January 1, 1998 who have been eligible to play for the club for at least two years since their 15th birthday.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Rhian Brewster are amongst those with first-team involvement who can still be included on the list, without taking up one of the limited List A spots.

Caoimhin Kelleher, Yasser Larouci, Curtis Jones, Adam Lewis and Herbie Kane also feature.

Further players can be added to List B at any time during the season, but the list must be submitted no later than midnight the day before a game.

The Reds get their Champions League title defence underway at Napoli in September 17.

List A: Alisson, Elliott, Firmino, Salah, Gomez, Henderson, Keita, Lallana, Lonergan, Lovren, Mane, Matip, Milner, Origi, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Robertson, Adrian, Shaqiri, Fabinho, Van den Berg, Van Dijk, Wijnaldum.

List B: Alexander-Arnold, Brewster, Jones, Kane, Kelleher, Larouci, Lewis.
