Liverpool confirm backroom appointment in Jurgen Klopp reunion

Liverpool have appointed Andreas Schlumberger to the newly created role of head of recovery and performance.

Jurgen Klopp worked with Schlumberger at Borussia Dortmund and the reunion comes as part of several behind the scenes changes.

He joins from Schalke and will be charged with helping player reintegrate back into the first team as they recover from injuries.

The 54-year-old's role will will see him communicate with Andreas Kornmayer, the head of fitness and conditioning, and head of physio Lee Nobes and Dr Jim Moxon, the club doctor.

Klopp was keen to appoint Schlumberger because he knows the demands that will be placed on the players.

His former club Schalke are struggling financially so were prepare to sanction the move as their Bundesliga woes continue.

The German has worked with several major clubs including Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach.

Schlumberger has also worked with the German youth teams.

Klopp has had to deal with a host of injuries to first team stars this term so the Reds are keen to make improvements in recovery and fitness areas.

Virgil van Dijk could be out for the season having hobbled off in the Merseyside derby while Joe Gomez is another long-term absentee.

They are also mindful that the condensed season with be followed by consecutive summers of international tournaments.

Chris Morgan is another recent change having returned to the club as first-team physiotherapist in August.

Away from the training ground loan and pathways manager Julian Ward was promoted to the role of assistant to sporting director Michael Edwards.

The Reds chief has been crucial to the team's recent success with their recruitment being rightfully praised.
