Liverpool confident Trent Alexander-Arnold will be fit for pre-season after England heartache

Liverpool are confident Trent Alexander-Arnold will be fit in the time to start pre-season training on July 12.

The England star suffered a devastating blow when a thigh injury picked up in the friendly against Austria on Wednesday, proved serious enough to rule him out of the European Championships.

There were fears the problem was so acute he could miss the start of the new season for his club.

But after returning to Anfield for assessment by Liverpool ’s own medical team, those worries were eased, with doctors suggesting he will be sidelined for around a month.

Alexander-Arnold will now remain on Merseyside to begin his rehab with the club’s physios, and he is hopeful he will be ready to return with the rest of the players by the second week of July.

The Reds are likely to have a training camp in France or Austria later in July - depending on Covid restrictions - and will then play a series of friendlies, though the club has yet to announce any dates.

Alexander-Arnold tweeted that he was "absolutely gutted" to miss out on the Euros after forcing his way back into manager Gareth Southgate’s plans with a fine end to the domestic campaign.

But there is a silver lining, at least, for his club boss Jurgen Klopp, with the player now getting the rest he needs, before returning for a full pre-season.
