Liverpool have been urged to cash in on Mohamed Salah because their over-reliance on his goals compromises them as a team.
The bold claim has been made by former Liverpool goalkeeper David James who has compared Salah’s position to that of Harry Kane at Tottenham Hotspur.
Both men were battling it out for the Premier League’s Golden Boot again with Kane’s strike in the 4-2 win at Leicester City on the final day ensuring he pipped Salah to the prize by 23 goals to 22.
However, Kane’s prolific form has not brought silverware to the north London club and speculation is now rife that he wants to quit Spurs in search of trophies.
While that hasn’t been an issue for Salah who has won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and Premier League title with Jurgen Klopp’s side, James believes it could be time for a change after the Reds were left empty-handed this term.
The Mirror quote him as telling Stadium Astro: "The idea of them (Liverpool’s owners) spending mega millions is very unlikely, I think they’re going to have to shift players out.
"In my eyes, he might be second in the Golden Boot running, but I think Liverpool play better without Salah.
“And the opportunity for Liverpool to cash in on Salah, Jota naturally fits into that front three, Firmino gets more freedom arguably, and Liverpool have a new dynamic up front rather than what seems to be a reliance on Salah’s goals.
"This is not about Mo Salah not being a good player – his goal record speaks for itself. Similar statistics to someone like Aguero where Pep Guardiola can look at Man City and not need Aguero.
“I think Jurgen Klopp and the way he has developed this side, Salah has become more of a focal point than that front three from seasons before.
“I think Liverpool’s fluidity is compromised by Salah, even though he scored. Tottenham’s another one, top goalscorers tend to not win leagues.
“I think they could cash in on him [Salah] and produce a stronger team."
