Liverpool complete signing of Blackburn Rovers keeper

Liverpool have completed the signing of goalkeeper Ben Winterbottom from Blackburn Rovers.

The 17-year-old shot-stopper impressed during a recent trial at the Kirkby Academy and has linked up with Barry Lewtas' under-18s squad.

Preston-born Winterbottom was named on the bench for Saturday's 1-0 derby win over Everton at Finch Farm.

“Ben was available and with the injuries we've got, it's about making sure we have enough cover,” Lewtas told the ECHO.

“He's a good boy and has settled in really well. He's a positive character around the dressing room.

“He has trained well and will prove to be a good addition to the squad.”

Liverpool Under-18s have been short of keepers since No 1 Vitezslav Jaros suffered an ankle injury earlier this month.

With Dan Atherton too old for FA Youth Cup duty, the Reds had to sign Fulham's Luca Ashby-Hammond on an emergency loan for their semi-final tie with Watford.

Jaros is expected to be fit for the FA Youth Cup final in May . Liverpool will discover their opponents when Manchester City face West Brom on Monday night.
