Scanlon, who has represented his country at under-15 level, can play left-back or in midfield.

The youngster reacted to the transfer on his Instagram account, posting a picture of him signing his contract.

"Happy to sign with Liverpool FC," he wrote. "A big thank you to BCFC and everyone who has helped me progress to this point, but as of today I start a new chapter. The hard work continues, let’s go!"

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has shown a willingness to turn to youth during his time in charge at Anfield, with the club's Academy having brought through an increasing number of players to the first team.

Curtis Jones, Neco Williams, Caoimhin Kelleher, Rhys Williams, Nat Phillips and Leighton Clarkson have all joined fellow Academy graduate Trent Alexander-Arnold in featuring for the senior side this season, while Jake Cain and Vitezslav Jaros have been on the bench.

Birmingham have gained a strong reputation for developing youngsters in recent years with 17-year-old Jude Bellingham having moved to Borussia Dortmund earlier this year for £25million and going on to make his England debut.
