Liverpool complete Kostas Tsimikas transfer to become first summer signing

Olympiacos defender Kostas Tsimikas has completed his £11.75million move to Liverpool.

The left-back, who featured against Wolves in the Europa League earlier this month, has been signed as much-needed cover for Andy Robertson.

Liverpool moved for the Greece international having walked away from their pursuit of Norwich's Jamal Lewis after the Canaries set their asking price at double the initial £10million offer the Reds made to the relegated Premier League club.

Jurgen Klopp said: "We have watched Kostas for a long time. He is a very good footballer with an attitude to win and to compete, and I really like his mentality. It fits perfectly with the mood and the desire we have in our dressing room already."

It is understood Liverpool's sporting director Michael Edwards met with Olympiacos general director Lina Souloukou at Molineux on Thursday to finalise a deal for the 24-year-old.

Tsimikas has now passed his medical and agreed personal terms on a long-term contract with the Reds.

Tsimikas said: "I'm very happy, I'm very proud to be here. For me, [it's] the biggest club in the world. It's an honour to be here and I will give my best.

"The league here, I like a lot. I watch it on the TV and it was always one dream I had from when I was a kid to come to play in this league and to come through.

"With a lot of work and focus on what I do and what the coach wants, and every day working hard in training, I can be on the highest level.

"[I want] to achieve [our] goals. To win the league again and also to win the Champions League."

Tsimikas is Liverpool's first signing of the summer, having seen centre-back Dejan Lovren leave in a £10.9million deal to Zenit St Petersburg and midfielder Adam Lallana join Brighton following the expiration of his contract.

Liverpool manager Klopp does not anticipate having a busy or big-spending transfer window but is looking to strengthen central defensive options and potentially his forward line.
