Liverpool Comedy Festival promises to cause city's biggest ever fit of giggles on Church Street

A 'mammoth flash mob' - dubbed the Laugh Mob - will launch this year's Liverpool Comedy Festival in what organisers say will be the 'biggest fit of giggles' the city has ever seen.

The secret event will involve a large group of people wearing red noses and holding placards suddenly descending on Church Street before laughing in unison.

The mob's date, time and exact location remain a closely-guarded secret so shoppers will be surprised.

It is just one of a number of free comedy events popping up throughout Liverpool during the festival, which opens on September 20.

They also include the Comedy Festival Choir, which will be spreading happiness with songs that are sure to raise a smile as well as the World’s Smallest Comedy Club - a four-seat tent featuring three-minute performances.

It will be at Liverpool ONE at lunchtime on Friday, September 20 and at the Royal Court Theatre on Saturday, September 20.

This year's headliners are Griff Rhys-Jones, star of QI and Have I Got News For You Sindhu Vee, Northern Joker Justin Moorhouse, star of Bobby & Harriet Get Married Harriet Kemsley and Richard Herring, who will be bringing his RHLSTP podcast.

The festival will also shines the spotlight on humour's ability to make us happier and healthier with the family friendly International Weekend of Wellbeing at the Royal Court and Courtyard restaurant.

The Feeling Funny Mums, Youth and Men’s projects, which the Comedy Trust delivers all year round, will all performing new shows using humour to tackle poor mental health.

There will also be a sound bath, VR meditation booths, a smoothie bike and forest bathing as well as Stay Awake Hypnosis - a guided meditation that attempts to prevent its listeners from relaxing by unsettling them with disturbing and worrying thoughts.

Liverpool Comedy Festival runs from September 20-29, 2019. Further details at www.liverpoolcomedyfestival.com
