Liverpool coach drops team news hint ahead of Arsenal clash amid double injury blow

Liverpool could field a number of young players against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.

That's according to the Reds' assistant manager Pep Lijnders, who has been speaking about the options available to Liverpool for the fourth round tie at Anfield.

Lijnders gave an update on the latest injury news at his pre-match press conference this afternoon (Saturday), including on central defender Joel Matip.

"His knee is still irritated. He still needs time to settle. He will not be involved, he needs rest."

In addition, Lijnders said that Xherdan Shaqiri would not be back until after the international break, while he said Mohamed Salah was only substituted as a precaution in Sunday's game against Tottenham.

As such, he has hinted that Liverpool could make changes for the game against Arsenal , with former Fulham teenager Harvey Elliott "ready to feature" after serving a two-week FA ban, while Lijnders confirmed that Caoimhin Kelleher is set to start in goal.

"It wouldn't be intelligent to make the squad smaller by not using it's strength. One of it's strength is the power of the youth. You have seen that before," he said.

"We have some special (young) talent. It would not be intelligent not to use it. They have a point to prove but we only focus on ourselves. We want to be the best we can be.

"We want to dictate play, it's our ball. By focusing on ourselves, that forces development of the boys. Let the opposition worry about us and let us focus on ourselves.

"It's important the youngsters are training around the first team. It creates a natural development for them. They can see with their own eyes the small detail. Not much more powerful weapon than examples of senior pros."
