Liverpool City Region areas where coronavirus rates are rising and falling

Sefton's coronavirus infection rate continues to move in the right direction, with cases falling by 25% this week.

Other parts of the Liverpool City Region are seeing their case numbers increase - by up to as much as 170%.

It is worth noting Sefton still has one of the highest rates in the region, and that we are still talking about small numbers across all six boroughs.

Liverpool's public health director has warned that cases of Covid-19 in the city are "on the rise" - with the latest data indicating a doubling of infection rates in a week.

In the seven days up to May 26, Knowsley, St Helens and Wirral also saw a rise in cases.

Halton also saw its infection rate decrease, with a fall from 12 to 11 new cases.

A recent spike in Formby saw public health surge testing teams deployed to the area, as well as nearby Ainsdale, last month.

Sefton Council confirmed the presence of the new highly transmissible variant in the borough on May 11.

In the seven days to May 10, Sefton's covid infection rate had more than doubled - jumping from 26 to 55 per 100,000 in a week.

Swift action from the council and health chiefs appears to have worked, with the borough's rate continuing to fall.

Liverpool City Region coronavirus infection rates in the week to May 26:

Liverpool - 14.1 per 100,000 (+169% on the previous week)

Wirral - 10.5 per 100,000 (+143%)

Sefton - 15.2 per 100,000 (-25%)

Knowsley - 11.3 per 100,000 (+42%)

St Helens - 15.5 per 100,000 (+8%)

Halton - 8.5 per 100,000 (-8%)
