Liverpool city centre pub forced to pour £2,000 worth of beer down the drain

A popular Liverpool pub has revealed how it has been forced to pour £2,000 worth of beer down the drain due to lockdown.

Gastropub The Monro, on Duke Street in the city centre, is hugely popular throughout Liverpool, with a long history dating back to 1815.

The pub, which is known for offering a retreat for visitors with log fires and Georgian architecture, has been closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Since The Monro was forced to close its doors several months ago when lockdown began, beer deliveries have now gone to waste.

Taking to Facebook, the team at The Monro wrote: “We have to pour £2,000 worth of beer down the drain next week. It has to be a witnessed destruction for customs purposes.”

Responding to a customer on Facebook, they also added: “Kegs arrived just before lockdown, they are all now out of date. Certainly past their best.”

Fans of The Monro were quick to comment on the issue, with one person saying: “What a shame!”.

Another asked if the pub would consider selling the beer to takeaway, though this is not possible since the beer is now out of date.

Instead of being disappointed and down about the loss, The Monro has looked for a silver lining.

Following the statement, the pub wrote: “Don't fret, it arrived just before lockdown so it's a sign that the wheels of re-opening are slowly turning”.

Today, Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed that bars, pubs and restaurants - plus several other hospitality businesses - can reopen from July 4, provided they are ‘Covid secure’.
