Liverpool city centre deserted as UK's third national lockdown begins

Liverpool city centre stood empty today as crowds stayed at home following the announcement by the Prime Minister last night.

Usually busy streets, filled with shoppers and tourists, were deserted with only a few people spotted heading to work places or on their daily walk.

Pictures taken this afternoon also show major roads such as The Strand left almost completely empty, in scenes similar to March when the first lockdown was announced.

The UK's third national lockdown comes after a spike in COVID-19 cases across the country.

The rate of infection has shown an alarming increase in the Liverpool City Region since late December with some areas worse affected than others.

People are only allowed to leave their homes for essential purposes like going to work if they can’t work from home and to buy essential items.

Boris Johnson has asked people to follow the new rules in a bid to suppress the virus, with the new rules being made law tomorrow Wednesday, January 6.

The government stated that a number of essential shops are allowed to stay open throughout the duration of the lockdown. This includes food shops, supermarkets and pharmacies.

Lockdown measures are expected to be in place until at least February as the mass vaccination programme is rolled out across the country.
