Liverpool church bells will ring 99 times today in tribute to Prince Philip

Cathedrals and churches are set to ring their bells today in honour of Prince Philip's passing.

Following conversations with the Church of England and the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers, bells will toll 99 times - or up to five minutes - at noon today.

A spokesperson for the bell ringers said: "We are saddened by the news that Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, died on 9th April aged 99.

"He had been dedicated to Her Majesty the Queen and the many interests for which he was Patron.

"His legacy of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme has benefited bell ringing through service and activities for young people.

"Following conversations with the Church of England, half-muffled tolling or chiming of a single bell on Saturday, April 10 2021 at 12 noon, 99 times or up to five minutes will take place in churches throughout."

It's not known if the Anglican Cathedral will take part in today's tribute, as the cathedral observed the tradition yesterday in honour of the Duke's death.

A post uploaded to Twitter by @LivCathedral said: "[Liverpool Cathedral bells] tolls 99 times. Ringers came from their workplaces before daily Evening Prayer, to mark the passing of the Duke of Edinburgh on this the day of his death.
