Tom Werner, the chairman of Liverpool, has promised the club's supporters that they will return stronger next season despite the disappointment of narrowly missing out on a first Premier League title.
Liverpool's victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday ensured that Jurgen Klopp's side would finish with a club record total of 97 points, yet reigning champions Manchester City pipped their rivals to retain their crown by one point.
Though 97 points would have been enough to come top of the pile in any post-1992 season bar two, Liverpool's wait to win a domestic title goes on and will now stretch into its 30th year.
But for Werner and the club's Fenway Sports Group owners, this near miss will only act as a foundation on which to build next season's challenge under the stewardship of Klopp.
"We’re only going to get stronger," Werner promised at Anfield on Sunday. "Ninety-seven points, it’s a remarkable year. We obviously didn’t win the league but we’ll be back next year and we’ve got a lot of motivation to win the league next year. I’m excited.
"It was a magical season. Obviously we’re disappointed that we didn’t win the league but it was a remarkable season and the squad is exciting.
"I think that we’ve made a lot of friends around the world and I think we’ve done well by our supporters. I can’t say enough about Jurgen and all the talent on the field."
The disappointment of missing out on domestic honours will be tempered if Liverpool win a sixth European Cup in next month's Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur.
A remarkable 4-0 victory against Barcelona last Tuesday saw Liverpool overturn a 3-0 first-leg deficit to reach the Madrid showpiece and extend their campaign beyond Sunday.
Werner hailed the club's support base for the role they played in Tuesday's historic win and for the encouragement they have given Klopp's squad all the ay through the season
"The support was extraordinary," he said. "As Jurgen said, between the support on Tuesday and the way the team played on Tuesday, that was one of the great matches at Anfield.
"I look forward to a great match in Madrid."
