Liverpool chief to test Jurgen Klopp's resolve after 'secret meeting'

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner could face Jurgen Klopp's wrath after details of a secret meeting have emerged.

According to The Sun, the Reds chief met with senior European club executives in Paris last month to discuss squeezing more games into the season.

The report adds that representatives from Manchester United, Arsenal, Barcelona, PSG, Juventus, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid were also present.

The big game players were brought together by Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross who runs the International Champions Cup, a pre-season tournament that came into existence in 2013 and won three times by Real Madrid.

Ross proposed a revamped version of the competition, one that will see more money ploughed into it and more games.

It's suggested that the NFL tycoon also has an agreement with UEFA boss Aleksander Ceferin to have the Cup certified as official UEFA event.

The club chiefs present were supposedly offered the chance to become stakeholders in the refurbished tournament and own equity shares. Ross, however, was keen to stress that the competition would only go ahead if the clubs committed to playing their first team players and not using it as an opportunity to blood youngsters.

This may be an issue for Klopp. The Liverpool boss refused to manage Liverpool's recent FA Cup replay win over Shrewsbury and would not allow his first team stars to play either.

The fourth round replay fell during the Reds' winter break and the German was adamant his team's plans would not be changed.

So with the proposal of yet more games coming during the off-season, Klopp may yet have another fixture dilemma to contest with.

Interestingly, Werner recently backed Klopp's stance on the FA Cup replay and insisted that "protecting the health of players" is a priority.
