Liverpool chief explains moment club knew to appoint Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool have made some great signings in their recent history, but none quite as important as Jurgen Klopp .

The former Borussia Dortmund boss has worked wonders at Liverpool since his arrival in October 2015, with last season's Champions League win forever etching his name into the club's history books.

And it seems it took Klopp just a single phone call to convince Liverpool's owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), that he was the man for the job.

FSG president Mike Gordon told Sports Illustrated : "Analytically, [Dortmund] stacked up very well relative to expected performance. I called Jürgen. We had an extraordinary conversation, and it was pretty clear to me by the time I hung up that he was the right person.

"We arranged a meeting in New York City, had a lengthy discussion late one night and the following day, and it was very straightforward. This was the perfect choice.”

Gordon says Klopp then left the meeting to allow his agent to finalise his move to Anfield, but soon had to dive into a local store to buy a hat in order to avoid detection by foreign tourists.

Klopp would do well to go anywhere unnoticed now, having taken Liverpool back to the summit of world football.

He could yet further cement his name into Anfield folklore should the Reds hold on to their comfortable lead atop the Premier League table and secure their first domestic title in 30 years.

And Gordon was in no two minds about the managerial abilities of Klopp, and insists he could transfer his talents to any industry.

“He’s a polymathematical guy,” Gordon added. “I spent 30 years as an investor speaking to some of the best CEOs in the world, and Jürgen is right up there with them. If he wasn’t managing a football club, he could be managing a Fortune 500 company.”
