Liverpool 'changed everything' for Champions League final as Jurgen Klopp explains why it'll be different to Kiev

Jurgen Klopp insists fatigue won't derail Liverpool's Champions League final dream as they prepare for Saturday's clash with Tottenham in the scorching heat of Madrid.

The German coach is the first manager to take an English club to three European finals in his first three seasons of continental competition.

Both against Sevilla in Basel in 2016 and against Real Madrid in Kiev last year, the Reds ran out of gas at the end of gruelling campaigns and slumped to heartbreaking defeats.

However, Klopp believes his side are feeling refreshed after the three-week break since the end of the Premier League campaign.

“It's the same for both of us. Both teams will be fresh, that is not an issue,” Klopp said.

“Last year with Real Madrid they knew they couldn't be champions in Spain so they only had to keep their rhythm before the final. That was a massive difference.

“It was like when we faced Barcelona (in the second leg of the semi-final). When we played at Newcastle, Barcelona had a holiday pretty much.

“It doesn't help always but it can make a difference. This time we both have exactly the same circumstances.

“There comes a point later when if you feel really tired, you have to punch down that inner voice about being tired and go and go and go.

“There will be moments of momentum in the final – if you have it, keep it, if you don't have it then get it back. They are all important things in these games.”

It was telling that the Liverpool squad only flew to Madrid on Friday - 24 hours later than Kiev a year ago. Klopp has tried to treat it like a normal European away game in a bid to get the best out of his players.

Asked what else he had differently, Klopp was giving little away.

"Everything, we changed everything," he smiled.

"In all the finals I played so far we did the build up similar. This time we changed everything. It is completely different. The only thing we kept the same was the starting time!"
