Liverpool Champions League winner labels 'incredible' Reds star the best he's ever seen

When Chris Kirkland joined Liverpool in August 2001, he became not only the Reds' most expensive goalkeeper but also the priciest in British transfer history.

Now nearly 18 years on from trading Coventry City for Anfield and his £6million transfer fees looks meagre in comparison to the fees thrown around these days.

Even back in 2001, just a month before Kirkland's move to Merseyside, Gianluigi Buffon had joined Juventus in a world-record £33million deal.

That record was only broken last summer, first by Alisson's move to Liverpool before Kepa Arrizabalaga signed for Chelsea weeks later.

Kirkland joined the Reds when just 20-years-old, viewed as the long-term option between the sticks. However, injuries ensured he never lived up to his early potential as he left for Wigan Athletic in 2006 following a year on loan at West Bromwich Albion.

In comparison, Alisson hasn't missed a minute of Premier League or Champions League action this season and looks certain to be Jurgen Klopp's first-choice goalkeeper for years to come.

The Brazilian has already made more Premier League appearances for Liverpool than the one-time England international, while he's only six games behind his overall total of 45.

Alisson is also well on course to win the Premier League Golden Glove award this season having kept 17 clean sheets from 31 appearances this season.

And having seen the 26-year-old in action in training courtesy of his now former role of assistant manager for Liverpool FC Women, Kirkland has labelled the Reds shot-stopper as the best goalkeeper he's ever seen.

"I’ve been lucky enough to be down at the training ground a couple of times," he told TalkSPORT. "He’s the only goalkeeper I’ve watched and gone, ‘Wow’.

"I walked away and I was purring when I got home. I was smiling because I’d just seen an incredible session from him.

"John Achterberg, the goalkeeper coach there, and Alisson were training with Simon Mignolet. Those two were great but Alisson was just incredible."
