Liverpool CEO Peter Moore condemns supporters who ignored the club's stay-at-home message

Liverpool CEO Peter Moore has criticised supporters who flouted social distancing rules and ignored club guidance to celebrate the Reds’ trophy lift outside Anfield.

An estimated 3,000 fans turned up outside the ground on Wednesday night, despite pleas from Merseyside Police, Liverpool City Council, the club themselves and influential supporters group Spirit of Shankly to stay clear of Anfield.

A dispersal zone was put in place outside the ground at 9.30pm which remained in place as of Thursday afternoon as local authorities tried to minimise the congregating of supporters during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

In the build up to the game, Liverpool released a number of statements urging supporters to steer clear when the Premier League title was celebrated behind closed doors.

And following on from the club releasing a statement earlier this afternoon voicing their disappointment with supporters, Moore has now moved to condemn those who ignored the instructions they were given ahead of the game.

“There’s a global pandemic going on and we tried very hard,” he told talkSPORT. “It was unfortunate that people felt compelled. I understand why, but am I comfortable with it? No.

“We’re living in a different world, we’re living in a world where people are dying every day and I think that as tempting as it was for everybody to come I just wish everybody was able to stay at home.

“The huge majority stayed at home with their friends and families and celebrated at home and Sky, to their credit, helped us enormously, I was delighted they were able to put this game on its Pick platform to make it free to air, and what a show they, the Premier League and the club put on.

“But it was unfortunate that people chose to not adhere to the advice of the manager and the players and gathered outside Anfield.

“I just hope and I pray there are no repercussions weeks from now and that nobody is going to be negatively impacted in days to come here.”
