Liverpool cathedrals lit up with rainbows in celebration of city's artists on LightNight

Both of Liverpool's cathedrals were lit up by a projection of rainbows tonight in celebration of the city's artistic community who would usually be taking part in LightNight.

The annual festival would have taken place in venues and public spaces across the city centre this evening but was cancelled due to the coronavirus lockdown.

Instead, artists and performers shared their work online using the hashtag #LightNightatHome - and buildings across the city were lit up in bright colours despite the empty streets.

Liverpool's two cathedrals, linked by Hope Street and often host to special LightNight events, were instead lit up by a projection of rainbows, symbolising hope and thanks during the crisis.

The projection was created by tech companies Adlib and Draw and Code, two firms that are partners with many of its arts organisations and help keep the city's cultural scene flowing.

Charlotte Corrie, director of LightNight's produce Open Culture, said: "At Liverpool’s beating heart is its creative community. It’s felt like a pang, each time you see a friend cancel an event because you know how hard that decision was, how hard they’ve been working on it - and how difficult it is to plan for the future.

"We are so proud to be part of this city’s creative community, and so honoured to provide a platform for it each year.

"Saying thank you and celebrating each and every person who makes up that artistic community is an important moment for us. The city will be back, and these are the people who will help it get its heart back."

You can still see much of the work that was displayed online this evening. Search the hashtag #LightNightatHome or see a list of highlights here.
