Liverpool captaincy order under Jurgen Klopp after Alisson steps up against AC Milan

As Liverpool recorded their win over AC Milan on Tuesday night, Alisson helped provide an example of how Jurgen Klopp has revamped the club’s leadership group this season.

The Brazilian keeper was wearing the captain’s armband as a much-changed Reds side claimed a comeback victory at the San Siro.

Despite making eight changes from the side that celebrated a last-minute victory over Wolves, Alisson’s presence as skipper was unsurprising given what Klopp revealed about Liverpool ’s captaincy order in September.

The squad voted to add Alisson , Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Andy Robertson to the team’s existing leadership trio of Jordan Henderson, James Milner, and Virgil van Dijk.

“We had three captains in Hendo, Milly, Virg and the players voted for another three,” the Liverpool boss said . "So that was won by Trent, Robbo and Alisson Becker.

"It was just that from time to time last year with the amount of injuries we had, we had no-one available from the players' committee out on the pitch.

"So that is why I decided to increase the group to six."

Van Dijk took the armband when Henderson was substituted after 68 minutes against Wolves last weekend.

The Dutchman had previously captained Liverpool from the outset this season in the 4-0 win over Arsenal.

It was also a year ago today that Alexander-Arnold first led out the Reds as captain against FC Midtjylland in the Champions League.

Liverpool managed a 1-1 draw, as the right-back marshalled a similar side to the unfamiliar one that faced Milan, with Academy graduates Leighton Clarkson and Billy Koumetio both featuring.

After the game, Alexander-Arnold spoke of his pride at being chosen to lead the team out for a European game.

“Obviously it's always been a dream, it's always special to play on Champions League nights,” he told liverpoolfc.com .

“An extremely proud moment for me and the people who have helped me do that.

“You've obviously got to give thanks to the manager and the staff who chose me to captain the team tonight.

“It was a really proud night for me on a personal note. I think I'll look back on tonight with fond memories as being captain for the first time.”
