Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson suffers injury setback ahead of Red Star Champions League clash

Jordan Henderson has been ruled out of Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday night.

Henderson came off at half-time during Saturday’s 1-0 win at Huddersfield Town complaining of a hamstring problem.

Jurgen Klopp is already without Naby Keita, Henderson’s fellow midfielder, who picked up a similar injury while on international duty with Guinea.

The Liverpool manager confirmed on Tuesday that neither would be available against Serbian champions Red Star.

“Hendo got a little hamstring injury in the game,” Klopp said. “From what I understand, it is not too serious but enough that he is not available tomorrow or at the weekend.

“From that day on, we will count the days and hopefully against Arsenal [on 3 November], he can be back.”

While Henderson is unlikely to return in time for Cardiff City’s visit to Anfield on Saturday, Keita is progressing well, having returned to training this week.

“Naby is in a good way already again, he is outside running and we will have to see, take it day by day.

“We cannot put any pressure on that so we will have to see when he is fully fit. It shouldn’t be that long anymore.”

Liverpool will be able to call upon Sadio Mané for Wednesday night’s Group C clash.

The winger has recovered fully from breaking a thumb on international duty and Klopp confirmed that he is “in contention” to start.
