Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson 'emulated club legend' with Champions League winner vs Milan

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson 'reminds' Peter Crouch of his ex-Reds teammate and club legend Steven Gerrard after his match-winning performance against Milan.

Henderson hit his first Champions League goal in seven years to seal a dramatic comeback win over AC Milan in front of a pulsating Anfield crowd on Wednesday night.

It had been a tricky tie for the Reds, who failed to make their early dominance pay after taking the lead through a Fikayo Tomori own goal before Mo Salah saw a penalty saved.

And the home side suffered a sucker punch as they fell behind minutes before the break as Ante Rebic and Brahim Diaz both netted within two minutes for the visitors.

But in the second half, Salah finally got his goal as he slotted home from a delicate Divock Origi pass.

And it was captain Henderson who popped up to net the winner with a low drive into the bottom corner with a fine strike.

Following the goal, BT Sport pundits Crouch and Rio Ferdinand were full of praise for the Liverpool talisman for his stellar performance.

Asked if the goal reminded him of his former teammate Gerrard, Crouch said: "It definitely does [remind me of Gerrard]. How many times have we seen a certain Steve Gerrard.

"So much like him, on a European night, how he’s kept that on top of it, it’s a fantastic technique. On the half-volley like that on the laces is really difficult."

Fellow BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand agreed the Liverpool skipper showed a lot of quality for the goal.

He said: "He’s someone who leads by example. He doesn’t score much but he drives the team and offers moments when they need guidance, when they need calmness at times, he’s the person they look to and today came up with a fabulous goal."

The win gives Liverpool an early advantage in Group B as Atletico Madrid and Porto played out a goalless draw in Spain – where Chancel Mbemba was sent off late on for the visitors.
