Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson delivers honest VAR verdict following Tottenham win

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson , who set up the winning goal as his side beat Jose Mourinho's Tottenham on Saturday , admits he was frustrated by the delay caused by the video assistant referee (VAR) during the game.

The Reds celebrated Roberto Firmino's strike but were then made to wait a few seconds while a check was conducted in order to make sure the goal was to stand.

The check, which was looking to see if Henderson had used his hand to control the ball in the build-up to the goal being scored, was completed without changing the on-field decision, meaning that Jurgen Klopp's side led.

They held out for the victory, but Henderson was keen to speak about VAR afterwards, as he admitted he is not altogether happy with how the system has been implemented.

Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, alongside former Reds man Jamie Redknapp , Henderson said: "Was [the check] for me? I thought it just hit me head!

"I’m sick of hearing about [VAR] and talking about it to be honest. The Sheffield United, West Ham one. I think we’re talking about it a little bit too much.

"It isn’t great to be able to wait. I’m sure there were goals today disallowed for different reasons.

"As a player it’s difficult. When you’re waiting 20 or 30 seconds for every single goal it is tough.

"I know we try to get everything right but it does take away that passion and emotion from the game so we need to be careful we don’t take that away, because that’s what football is all about."

Henderson is far from the only Premier League player to have voiced concerns over the technology , but there is no suggestion that VAR will be removed from the professional game now it has been implemented.

The Reds will hope VAR does not steal the headlines next weekend when they face Manchester United at Anfield as they chase down further records at the top of the Premier League table.
