Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson calls for stronger punishments against racism in football

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has called for stronger punishment and greater education in an attempt to combat racism in football.

The Manchester derby was blighted at the weekend when a 41-year-old City supporter was arrested after allegedly making racist gestures towards United midfielder Fred.

Henderson was part of England's Euro 2020 qualifier in Bulgaria in October that was halted twice and came close to being abandoned after racist behaviour from a section of the home fans.

UEFA subsequently ordered Bulgaria to play two matches behind closed doors - one suspended for two years - and fined them £65,000.

And the Reds skipper said: “It's a topic we are probably speaking about a little too much at the minute, especially what I've experienced recently on international duty.

“It's not a nice topic to speak about, but it's one where we need to come together as players, clubs, supporters and start to fight it again, with stronger punishments, more education.

“It's a problem, we can't pretend it's happening in every other country and not in ours, it's happening everywhere. We have to fight it as best as we can.”
