Liverpool captain confusion, Jurgen Klopp's strange press conference and other moments missed

Liverpool were ruthless in front of goal on Thursday night as they dominated a Carabao Cup third round match against Lincoln City 7-2.

Jurgen Klopp made 10 changes to his side that confidently dispatched Chelsea on Sunday and his rotation worked as the Reds put in a stellar performance.

Xherdan Shaqiri superbly whipped a free-kick into the top corner for Liverpool's first, teenage star Curtis Jones scored twice on the night as did the excellent Takumi Minamino while Marko Grujic and Divock Origi also both got on the scoresheet.

But you knew all of that, of course.

What you might have missed, however, were some interesting subplots at the LNES Stadium.

Captain confusion

Virgil van Dijk was the only player to keep his place in Klopp's starting XI, mainly due to the lack of centre-back options at the manager's disposal.

Naturally, given his talent and leadership qualities, the big Dutchman was handed the captain's armband to lead out his team and put in a typically assured display to see the Reds head into the dressing room with a clean sheet after 45 minutes.

After the break, Van Dijk was replaced by Fabinho and there was then some confusion among Liverpool's fan base over who was captain for the second-half.

The armband was given to Divock Origi - as the most senior Liverpool player still on the pitch.

Lincoln's official surprise

No fans were allowed inside the LNES Stadium for the match due to restrictions around COVID-19.

If restrictions had been lifted, there would have almost certainly been a raucous atmosphere inside the ground with the League One side welcoming the Premier League and World Champions.

However, there was a surprisingly high number of Lincoln officials in the stadium for the match on Thursday night.

In the second half they could be heard shouting, cheering and generally going mad every time the home side took a shot and, of course, scored their two goals.

Chelsea still ringing in the ears

At Stamford Bridge on Sunday, the Liverpool players were loud.

A massive game at the start of their Premier League title defence was met by shouting, rallying cries, cajoling, direction and celebration as the Reds ran out 2-0 winners.

The on-pitch decibel levels at Lincoln, though, were noticeably lower.

It may have been the early goals, the fact the match was all but over at half-time as the visitors went into the changing rooms four goals to the good or even that Klopp had made a lot of changes to personnel with many playing together in competitive action for the first time.

Whatever the case, the match at Chelsea proves Liverpool are clearly bang up for defending their title while the strength in depth shown at Lincoln to score seven goals proves more silverware is definitely on the cards this term.

Klopp's unusual position

After the game, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp took up an unusual position for his post-match press conference.

The Reds boss joined the waiting media on a video call from the dugout at the LNES stadium.

Normally a press-conference room awaits the German coach but he delivered his thoughts pitchside after the 7-2 victory for this one.

Shaqiri vs advertising hoardings

Coronavirus rules mean that ballboys are currently not in place at stadiums to collect and retrieve balls while also giving them to players after the ball has gone out of play.

As such, footballs have been placed on cones around the outside of the pitch for players to collect if the current ball goes too far out of play into the stands.

However, on occasions a ball may not have been placed back onto the cones by one of the officials or the ball is in close reach and so it is up to the players to go and retrieve it so play can carry on.

And exactly that happened to Xherdan Shaqiri when he was forced to jump over the chest-high advertising hoardings before going to get the ball before the match could continue.
