Liverpool prepare for Ajax but face prospect of one month between Premier League games

Liverpool are still expecting Tuesday night's Champions League clash with Ajax to go ahead.

The Reds took the decision to cancel Jurgen Klopp Friday afternoon press conference following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday before the Premier League announced all weekend fixtures were to be postponed.

"At a meeting this morning, Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II," read a statement on Friday morning. "To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend's Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening's game.

"Further updates regarding Premier League fixtures during the period of mourning will be provided in due course."

Despite the postponement of the domestic visit from Wolves, the club are still expecting the meeting with Ajax in Group A of the Champions League to still go ahead as things stand.

Liverpool are planning for that fixture as normal as they get set for another busy couple of days conducting Champions League duties both at Anfield and the AXA Training Centre in Kirkby.

It means Klopp will next speak to the media at Anfield on Monday ahead of the visit from the Dutch giants as the Reds aim to bounce back from Wednesday night's 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Napoli in Italy.

"This decision [postpone Saturday's game] was made by the Premier League following the sad passing of Her Majesty The Queen," read a statement on Liverpoolfc.com. "The fixture will now be rescheduled, with updated details to follow in due course. Tickets will remain valid for the new match date. Please note, supporters who have purchased tickets for the Wolverhampton Wanderers game will be contacted directly by the club with further information once available."

Should Liverpool's next Premier League match against Chelsea, on September 18, be called off due to the period of mourning or preparations for the Queen's funeral, the Reds could be facing just under a month between league fixtures due to the upcoming international break.
