Liverpool café opening on Christmas Day so 'nobody is alone'

A café in Liverpool is opening on Christmas Day after saying “nobody should have to be alone”.

People are being invited to the café for a free hot drink and pastry if they need some company on the day.

The owners of Catherine Braidy Cake Parlour, in south Liverpool, did the same back in 2019 on Christmas Day before the 2020 lockdown.

This week, Braidy Maloney, who runs the venue with business partner Cath Williams, shared an update on Twitter, saying: “We’re opening the shop again on Christmas Day from 10.30am until 1pm for those who might need a bit of company. We’ll be serving Danishes and hot drinks at no cost. The best present is presence, nobody should have to be alone.”

Speaking to the ECHO, Braidy said: “The first year went really well, we had lots of customers donating things like mince pies and any that were left over we donated to the Whitechapel Centre.”

Talking about their inspiration for opening on Christmas Day, Cath added: “The first time we did it, we’d only been open since the end of September, but we’d already realised a lot of our customers were coming to us because they enjoyed having someone to chat to over a coffee.

“We knew that some of our customers were definitely going to be on their own on Christmas Day so decided to give them a place to come and have some company.”

Braidy added: “It’s only a couple of hours out of our day, and our families come down with us too. This year we’ll be putting on some festive tunes, serving hot and cold drinks and giving away pastries to those who want to come down.

Catherine Braidy Cake Parlour is on Aigburth Road, near the junction with Fulwood Road.
