Liverpool bring in free agent Andy Lonergan for pre-season tour of United States

Free agent Andy Lonergan is set to help alleviate Liverpool's goalkeeping injury crisis by joining the club's upcoming tour of the United States.

The Reds' first choice between the sticks, Alisson Becker, is currently on holiday after helping Brazil to Copa America glory this summer, while Polish youngster Kamil Grabara has also yet to return to Melwood.

The absence of that pairing would have provided opportunities for academy shot-stoppers Viteslav Jaros and Caoimhin Kelleher, but both will now miss the entirety of pre-season after picking up elbow and wrist injuries respectively.

Consequently, Jurgen Klopp has turned to former Preston, Leeds and Bolton goalkeeper Lonergan to boost the numbers when the Reds head Stateside on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old has been without a club since leaving Middlesbrough when his contract expired at the end of the 2018-19 campaign.

Lonergan will join Liverpool as they continue preparations for the new season by contesting three friendly fixtures in the US.
