Liverpool boss says France stars 'too expensive' amid Kylian Mbappe transfer link

Jurgen Klopp appeared to pour cold water on rumours linking Liverpool with Kylian Mbappe after saying France's top players are 'too expensive'.

Liverpool are one of several clubs reported to have an interest in Mbappe, who appears keen on a move from PSG to Real Madrid .

France are the reigning global champions after Mbappe helped his national team win the 2018 World Cup - but Liverpool have not had a French international on their books since 2017.

Manchester United paid a then world-record £89million to Juventus for World Cup winner Paul Pogba in 2016, while last summer Antoine Griezmann joined Barcelona from Atletico Madrid for £108m.

And Reds boss Klopp said the calibre of French player Liverpool would require simply costs too much money.

When asked why there was no France stars in his team, Klopp told Canal+: "There is no reason for it.

"Kylian plays for PSG. Griezmann wanted to go to Barcelona obviously - we know how good that team is.

"We would like to have a French player, but some of them are too expensive for us."

Paris Saint-Germain forward Mbappe is reportedly refusing to enter into negotiations over a new contract and is keen on a move to Spanish giants Madrid .

The 21-year-old has yet again been in sublime form this season, having scored 11 goals in 12 Ligue 1 games for PSG, as well as five in the Champions League including a hat-trick in a 5-0 win over Club Brugge.

Mbappe was linked with a move to Madrid earlier this year and has also been touted as a potential Liverpool target.

According to Marca PSG are growing increasingly worried about whether they will be able to hold on to the player for another summer transfer window, despite the fact he has two-and-a-half years left on his contract.

Mbappe would likely cost in the region of £180m.

The last France international Liverpool had on their books was Mamadou Sakho - although 18-year-old left back Yasser Larouci plays for the under-23s.
