Liverpool boss Klopp turned £30m transfers into £130m stars while rivals did the opposite, says Gary Neville

Former Manchester United full-back Gary Neville believes Jurgen Klopp's knack of turning emerging players into world-class stars has given Liverpool a leg-up on their rivals.

The Reds ended their 30-year title wait when Chelsea beat Manchester City at Stamford Bridge last week, capping a trophy-laden 12 months at Anfield with their first-ever Premier League crown.

Though Klopp finalised his transfer drive with the big-money signings of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker, it was shrewd deals like those for Andy Robertson (£8m), Mohamed Salah (£34m), Roberto Firmino (£29m) which propelled Liverpool into the title frame.

Firmino arrived at Anfield months before Klopp's appointment, but it was the German manager who moulded the forward into a key component in one of the world's best attacking units.

And Neville has hailed the work done by Klopp, suggesting rivals' squads are going in the opposite direction while the value of Klopp's players continue to rise.

"When Jürgen Klopp arrived, I didn't think he could win the title with the spending power of Man City, Man Utd and Chelsea," Nevilled told Sky Sports.

"But he's turned £30m players into £130m players. Other teams have turned £130m players into £30m players."
