Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp welcomes Government lockdown decision

Jurgen Klopp has welcomed the decision of the Government to allow elite sport to continue during lockdown.

While Liverpool were beating West Ham United 2-1 to move to the top of the Premier League table on Saturday evening, Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed new restrictions for the country that will start on Thursday and run until December 2 to combat the spread of coronavirus.

When the country was initially locked down in March, football and other sports were not allowed to resume until June.

And of the latest Government decision, Klopp said: “In a lockdown, it is really important for the people that they can do things they like to do, and watching football is obviously something that some people like to do.

“I’m happy we can continue.”

Liverpool, like most other clubs, have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic, with both Sadio Mane and Thiago Alcantara making public their positive tests and having to undergo a period of self-isolation.

But the Reds have managed to avoid any major outbreaks thus far with players tested regularly.

“We have proved we can keep the bubble safe,” added Klopp.

“We have had cases – pretty much everybody has had cases – but that’s the time we are in.

But we could isolate the cases pretty quickly and they didn’t spread so far.

“They didn’t happen on the training ground. They happened during travelling for the national teams or when players were coming new to the club and had to do travelling with people – normal life.”
